Video and teleconferencing have provided some of the major technology advances introduced into our courtrooms in the last ten years. We have moved from a time when implementation was about adherence to proprietary standards to today where industry standards ensure connection between systems is nearly always achieved.
The challenge for the modern courtroom is to ensure that video and teleconferencing are implemented in a manner that provides seamless integration with other courtroom technology components. Video screens and camera angles must provide appropriate image size and layout to ensure the remote participant is not disadvantaged. Electronic court documentation must be transported and displayed at the highest resolution possible. Integration with the courtroom sound reinforcement system must ensure that feedback and residual echo are eliminated, and audio between the locations must be totally natural, with no loss or clipping of words, and with the ability to double-talk. A remote participant must be seen and heard as though they were physically present in the court.
